Change is always stressful. We can be afraid of new, unknown territory, and it is hard to move away from family and familiar faces. Moving can be especially difficult for children who may not fully comprehend why you are moving or the reasons why the move will actually be better for them in the long run.
Tip #1: Talk To Your Kids about Moving
As soon as the move is a definite go, share the news with your kids. Make them feel included in the discussions , sharing the exciting changes about to happen. Use simple language so it is easier for them to understand why are you moving.
Reassure your children that their possessions, books, toys etc., will all be coming with them and try to show something exciting about the move. Make them look forward to the new experience, maybe they will be living closer to some of your relatives or some interesting place to visit?
Tip #2: Check Out The New House Together
If you are moving across town, you could get your kids excited by making a trip to see it. Let them check out the rooms, the backyard, and ask how they’d like to decorate their room. If the houe is far away, you can use the Internet to make a virtual tour of the house. Get them involved in the process and it will make the experience easier on everyone.
Tip #3: Ask Kids to Help Packing
Make sure younger kids know that their stuff is being packed up and moved and not being thrown away. Older kids might understand the process, but it may be more difficult for little ones to grasp.
Let them help pack their things and decorate their boxes so they will be easily recognizable after the move. Encourage kids to sort they belongings and try to donate some of their things. As much as possible, try to get their favorite toys and room set up first, even if it means ordering pizza and keeping other items in boxes a little longer. Don’t forget to label all boxes and try to take pictures of the contents to help you unpack later on.

Tip #4: Check out the New Community
As soon as possible, become a part of your new community. Get to know the neighbors, maybe even organize a house warming party.
Check out local activities that will allow both you and your kids to make new friends. If your child is a little shy, help them break the ice with the kids in the neighborhood and new friends at school. VIsit the playground, the local church, or the community center to meet new people!
Tip #5: Keep Your Family Routines
Do you always get pizza on Friday nights? Or maybe you spend Saturday mornings at the playground? Whatever routines you can keep, you should continue to do so.
Try to remain consistent with meal times and bedtimes. Keeping kids in their routine will help keep them calm and will help you feel a sense of order.
